Drywall Material Calculator, Calibrated on Real Projects

Board area in, order list out - sheets, compound by finish level, tape, screws and bead, using rates we validated against purchase quantities on a 1.7M SF package.

Built for contractors and estimators planning material orders. Enter net board areas and the calculator returns order quantities using production-validated coverage rates - the screw rate alone was checked against 9,074 lbs of actual purchase data.

Net wall square footage to be boarded (one face).
Typical 7-15% depending on layout complexity and wall heights. See our waste factor guide.

Calibration note: coverage rates are cross-checked against production data from completed commercial projects (screw poundage on our recent Maine multi-family package came within 2% of these rates) and manufacturer coverage published per product. Quantities only, no pricing - this tool is built for contractors and estimators planning orders, not for pricing DIY rooms. For a bid-grade takeoff of an actual drawing set, send us the plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a drywall material calculator versus a real takeoff?

A calculator extends the square footage you give it; a takeoff measures the drawings and finds the square footage - plus the wall types, ratings and conditions a calculator can't see. Use this tool for order planning and sanity checks; use a measured takeoff for bidding.

What screw quantity does the calculator assume?

About 5.3 lbs of 1-1/4 inch screws per 1,000 SF of board - a rate validated against actual purchase quantities on a 1.7 million SF commercial package, matching roughly one screw per square foot at around 200 screws per pound.

Why does the finish level change the joint compound quantity?

Higher finish levels add coats: Level 3 embeds and covers, Level 4 adds a finish coat on joints and fasteners, and Level 5 adds a full skim across the entire surface - roughly doubling compound versus Level 3.
